Black Business Spotlight: Divinity For Men

The men’s hair care industry is a tricky business to which one should pay careful attention. There are many products on the market that may not cater to “our” people, so getting the best results is never guaranteed. Finding products that promote growth and do not damage usually isn’t something you find in your local department stores. For Devin Demery, giving back to his people is a task he has put hard work into and which has greatly benefited many people. If your hair needs some work, then Divinity For Men might be the way to go.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from and what was your upbringing like?

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. Leimert Park, to be exact! Growing up was pretty interesting. I was surrounded by gang violence and influence, but managed to survive and head in a different direction. Out of all my close friends growing up I’m literally the last one left that isn’t dead or in prison.

What is Divinity For Men, and how did it start?

Divinity For Men is a men’s natural hair care line handcrafted in Leimert Park!

It started from me trying basically everything on the market for my hair and beard but not seeing anything that worked for my type of hair. I saw a lot of “All Natural” products that had words I could barely pronounce and also a lot of stuff with petroleum in it. Petroleum has absolutely no nutrients for your hair and clogs your hair follicles. Clogged follicles lead to the thinning of the hair and genetics takes care of the rest. So I did research on ingredients and products that worked best and gave it a try!

What moment did you realize your business was starting to go places?

When people would see me out in public and ask me what I use on my hair and beard and I tell them Divinity For Men and they respond, “oh that’s your brand? I’ve heard wonderful things about it!”

What are your customer favorites?

My favorite customers are all of them! But I really enjoy the ones that want to be educated on the products and aren’t just into buying things because of the name or who it’s associated with. The support means a lot to me and I’m more than grateful.

How do you separate yourself in a competitive industry?

My main goal was to give people high quality products at an affordable price! I see a lot of well-known brands selling similar products for way more, but they have the name and backing, which is fine! But I’d rather introduce people to a new way of living that isn’t going to break the bank.

What is your advice to any emerging entrepreneurs?

Sounds cliche but “Just do it” and don’t be afraid of failure. Always bet on yourself. Find a plan and stick to that no matter how long it takes. I started my business literally from a conversation in the barbershop I go to in my neighborhood. My barber is an older businessman who started from the bottom and worked his way up! Another person was in the shop explaining an idea for a business and my barber cut him off mid convo and said, “Stop talking about it and do it!” He didn’t wanna hear anymore about it until he actually had the ball rolling and could present a product. That stuck with me. The following week I launched Divinity For Men.
